Integrating Renewable Energy Installation Skills into Metalwork Technology Re-Skilling Programmes for Sustainable Development in Nigerian TVET Institutions

Abstract

This study examined the integration of renewable energy installation skills into Metalwork Technology re-skilling programmes for sustainable development in Nigerian TVET institutions. A mixed-method research design was adopted. The population comprised educators and technicians in selected TVET institutions in South-South Nigeria. A sample of 240 respondents was selected using multistage sampling. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and skill performance assessment checklist. Mean, standard deviation, and regression analysis were used for quantitative data, while thematic analysis was used for qualitative responses. Findings revealed that renewable energy re-skilling programmes significantly improved green production competencies, entrepreneurial intention, and sustainable fabrication practices. Participants demonstrated improved competencies in solar panel mounting fabrication, wind turbine component fabrication, and sustainable material utilization. Qualitative findings further showed increased confidence in local manufacturing, innovation, and green entrepreneurship. The study concludes that integrating renewable energy installation skills into Metalwork Technology re-skilling programmes can enhance workforce adaptability, promote sustainable development, and strengthen green industrialization in Nigeria. The study recommends curriculum revision, industry partnerships, and continuous professional development programmes for educators and technicians.
